John Houlton qualified from the University of Cambridge in 1970 and after 6 years in first opinion practice, returned to Cambridge, initially as University Assistant Surgeon, before becoming University Surgeon in 1980. In 1997 he joined the Veterinary Defence Society as a Claims Consultant and now runs his own consultancy.

He has been past President of BVOA, AO/Vet International, ESVOT and ECVS, and until recently was European Associate Editor for Veterinary Surgery. He is currently Executive Secretary of ECVS, a director of ESVPS and a panellist for the BVA/KC canine health schemes.

He has gained Diplomas in Veterinary Radiology and Small Animal Orthopaedics and in 1985 was awarded the BSAVA Simon Award for outstanding contributions to Veterinary Surgery. He has published extensively and has co-edited five text books, written numerous chapters and published over 50 peer reviewed papers. Beyond veterinary medicine, he has developed a deep interest in gundogs, and working Labradors in particular.
